Humanity and Hermit Crabs share something in common: We are both ensconced by a shell. The Hermit Crab by a literal one and we humans by a metaphorical one. The metaphor in this case being the habitable atmosphere we live in. Unlike the Hermit Crab, we cannot abandon our ‘shell’ once we have outgrown it. Unlike the Hermit Crab we cannot abandon our habitat to find better territories to live in. We are bound to this world and there is only one. We do not have the luxury to easily shrug off our responsibilities like an old shell. If our population keeps proliferating, we will destroy our precious atmosphere and oceans and the Shell that has protected us through millennia will vanish: We will not survive
